Plant Portrait: Julia Novoa

Interview by Matt Brand; Photographs by Jessi Matson
In this ongoing series, we shoot portraits of people with their beloved plants, and ask about their relationship with them. If you'd like to be considered for a plant portrait, contact us (you should live in NYC as that's where we are.)

Q: What attracted you this plant?
A: I was seeing this guy who had a lot of plants in his apartment. He had so many. My apartment is very goth, and so every plant I get dies. This plant doesn't seem to take much care, and I thought it was a survivor, so I got it.

Q: So you were inspired by your lovers' love for plants?
A: No, I was inspired by love. I love love. I also just love apartments with plants - they have so much life. I wanted my place to have a little bit of that.

Q: So unlike flowers, plants are a purchase that could be with you for the rest of your life. In fact they might even outlive you. How does that make you feel?
A: Not going to happen. It will die.

Q: What?
A: Yeah - it never works out.

Q: Wait are we talking about plants or boyfriends?
A: The plant!  I hope this one works out though. I really like him.

Q: The plant?
A: Yes the plant.
